Watermelon
Watermelon is very fragile and requires careful handling to avoid damage. Whilst the skin of watermelons is relatively strong, they are extremely fragile to dropping. Watermelons are very sensitive to chill damage at temperatures below 7ºC (42ºF). Decay in watermelon will result from extended periods of storage at temperatures above 20º – 24ºC (70º – 75ºF). Exposure to excessive levels of ethylene gas will accelerate decay. Watermelon should not be stored with fruits and vegetables that are high producers of ethylene. Ambient ethylene from vehicle exhausts is also a factor.

Packaging Method
PEAKfresh bin liners can be used successfully to reduce damage caused by ethylene gas. Watermelons are usually transported in bulk where there is a useful application for PEAKfresh sheet as a bulk wrapping material and also the use of bubble PEAKfresh film. Chill damage at temperatures below 7ºC (42ºF) is a major cause of deterioration.
